Pfizer Consumer Healthcare is set to extend the Listerine range with the launch of Listerine Teeth Defence - a new product combining Freshburst Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash with 100 parts per million fluoride ions.
According to Pfizer Consumer Healthcare Oral Care Category Manager, Louise Chamberlain, Pfizer has always been committed to innovation behind the Listerine brand and is delighted by this new product development.
"Today, with the addition of fluoride, Listerine Teeth Defence is clinically proven to help prevent dental caries, reverse early signs of tooth decay and remineralise tooth enamel.
"Like all products in the range, Listerine Teeth Defence also contains the unique combination of Listerine's four essential oils, ensuring the product is effective in killing the germs that cause plaque and gingivitis," she said.
Listerine Teeth Defence was developed in direct response to feedback from dentists and hygienists in Australia and around the world.
"Listerine's anti-microbial and anti-plaque qualities have been widely acknowledged by dental practitioners for many years, but it was identified that fluoride was an important consideration for oral health professionals when recommending a daily use mouthwash to patients," Ms Chamberlain said.
"The efficacy of Listerine Teeth Defence is supported by clinical studies that show it is at least as effective in promoting enamel remineralisation and fluoride uptake as a positive control fluoride mouthwash. The combination of ingredients in Listerine Teeth Defence also ensures that, when used twice daily after brushing, it strengthens teeth and provides continuing protection for healthier teeth and gums."
According to Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, the need for such a product is well supported.
"With so many areas around Australia still without a fluoridated water supply and increasing numbers of Australians consuming bottled water, we believe the availability of products that provide a safe, effective and convenient way to supplement fluoride hold great promise in helping to improve oral health," Ms Chamberlain said.
"We value the advice of oral health professionals that helped this product come to fruition and hope Listerine Teeth Defence will be recommended to patients as part of a daily oral home care routine."
