New from Dentsply, CELTRA® is an all-ceramic CAD block with a threefold functional microstructure containing lithium metasilicate, lithium disilicate and lithium phosphate crystals. These properties provide CELTRA with a distinct advantage in three areas. The high glass content allows the material to have a chameleon-like effect in the mouth; the inclusion of 10% zirconia ensures that this ceramic remains strong even when it is subjected to the load that would be expected to be resisted in the mouth (data on file); and the zirconia is completely dissolved within the microstructure. This results in smaller crystallites compared to lithium-disilicate. CELTRA comes in CAD blocks suitable for wet grinding in systems like CEREC and inLab in a precrystalised form and doesn’t require any additional crystalisation, therefore the processing time is reduced.

Ceramics play an increasingly important role in restorative dentistry. The advent of CAD/CAM all-ceramics has seen a changing of the guard from tried and trusted PFM restorations and without doubt, will more than likely become the standard of care. Their use in dentistry dates as far back as 1889 when Charles H. Land patented the all-porcelain "j...
